5 tips to help your child enter sleep
1. Build a trustful attitude about sleep by soothing your child as they need it.
(e.g., nursing, rocking, singing, patting their back)
- Establishing a positive attitude towards bed time builds a peaceful lasting routine as they mature. If a child knows their needs will be met they are more likely to feel comfort as they relax for bedtime.
(e.g., bath, read a book, rock and snuggle)
- When children know what to expect with a consistent routine it is easier for them to settle down and sooth themselves.
- Teething and reaching developmental milestones often cause sleep disruptions. Work hard to stay consistent with the routine you have established.
- The darker environment will stimulate the melatonin and creating the drowsy feeling.
- Blankets should be light so baby does not get too warm.
- As children learn to attach to something else they are transferring the attachment from their primary care provider to their favorite object which builds security and trust.
- No television- bright light stimulates the eye suppressing the melatonin.
- Keep a calm environment.
- Avoid offering foods that contain high sugar and caffeine, like chocolate.
